Mongolia: travel information

Formalities, visas

Citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany do not need a visa if they do not want to travel to Mongolia for more than 30 days. Citizens of other countries also do not need a visa if they do not enter Mongolia for more than 30 or 90 days. These countries include: Japan, USA, Canada, Brazil, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Serbia, Turkey and Israel. More information on these countries and a further list of countries can be found at:

Import and export of foreign currency

  • Local currencyThe import and export of the local currency is prohibited.
  • Foreign currenciesThere is no limit to the importation of foreign currencies, but a declaration is required. Export is permitted up to the amount declared on entry.

Import and export of goods

Items for personal use can be imported duty-free, including 600 cigarettes and 2 liters of alcohol. Hunters are allowed to import and export their personal hunting weapons including ammunition.

The export of antiques, valuable minerals, metals and hunting trophies is not permitted.

Infectious Diseases

The following infectious diseases can be expected in Mongolia:

  • Malaria, there is no risk of malaria in the country.
  • AIDS, HIV, but only in contact with blood (blood transfusions, unprotected sexual intercourse)
  • Amoebic dysentery
  • Bacterial agitation
  • Schistosomiasis
  • Cholera, an infection risk only exists for travelers who can come into contact with contaminated water or contaminated food.
  • Intestinal infections from contaminated food or water, including amoeba, lamblia, salmonella, shigella and worm infestation, as well as all kinds of viruses and bacteria
  • Early summer meningo encephalitis, mainly as a result of tick bites
  • Yellow fever
  • Hepatitis A and B, an infection with hepatitis B, is only to be expected in people who can come into contact with blood or in those who seek sexual contact.
  • Polio, polio
  • Plague, nationwide
  • tetanus
  • rabies
  • Typhoid fever, an infection risk only exists for travelers who come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.

Vaccination recommendations When traveling to Mongolia, the same vaccinations are recommended as in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

  • Cholera, but only among travelers who can come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.

How do you get to Mongolia?

Flights to Mongolia go from Berlin via Moscow and Novosibirsk and from Frankfurt via Moscow and Beijing (Pekin. The country’s only international airport is in Ulan Bator.

Space in the planes, especially in summer, is very scarce and it is getting worse early booking (around six months in advance) is recommended.

An express train of the Trans-Mongolian Railway runs once a week from Moscow via Ulan Bator to Beijing (Peking). There are also regular train connections between Ulan Bator and Beijing and between Ulan Bator and Moscow.

Several highways run through Mongolia, the main road leads from Ulan Bator to Irkutsk in the Russian Federation. Entry for foreigners is only possible through the following border posts: Altanbulag (Selenge Aimag), Tsgaannur (Bayan Ulgii Aimag), Ereen Tsav (Dornod Aimag) and Zamyy Uud (Dornogobi Aimag).

Travel in the country

Air connections

The national airline offers domestic flights, which are particularly recommended for trips to remote regions. However, the flight connections are often irregular and difficult in winter by snowstorms.

Railway

The country’s route network covers 1,815 km. The main route from north to south runs from Sühbaatar via Darhan and Ulan Bator to Saynshand.

Bus

A long-distance bus network connects the cities with each other, but due to the poor road conditions it is not recommended.

Roads

There are approximately 9,100 km of paved roads in Mongolia that are close to the larger cities. In the rest of the country, the road conditions are poor and hardly manageable without all-terrain cars with four-wheel drive, which can also be a special attraction.

Jeep rental cars with a driver can be rented through the local tour operator. Driving yourself is not recommended due to the poor road conditions. Horses and camels are also available.

Taxis

It is advisable to use the official taxis in the cities.

Traffic rules

To avoid trouble with the police or even the courts, drivers should strictly adhere to the traffic regulations in force in the country. Regardless of the information given here, it is advisable to obtain more detailed information from ADAC, AvD or the Mongolian Traffic Club.

Top speeds

  • Urban: In built-up areas there is a speed limit of 60 km/h.
  • Country roads: There is a speed limit of 80 km/h on country roads.

In addition, it is of course necessary to pay attention to the current local speed limits, which are indicated by traffic signs.

The official blood alcohol limit in Mongolia for drivers of motor vehicles is 0.0.

Store opening times

The stores in Mongolia are usually open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Cheap or country-specific goods, souvenirs

Typical souvenirs from Mongolia are items of clothing made of cashmere wool, felt carpets and jewelry. The national vodkas are also popular with tourists.

Currency, bank opening hours

The national currency of Mongolia is the tugrug:

The banks are usually open on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
