Montenegro: travel information

Formalities, visas

Passports are required to enter Montenegro. The passport must be valid for at least the planned length of stay. A visa-free stay is permitted for up to 90 days. ID cards of the Federal Republic of Germany are not recognized. Foreigners have to register with the police in Montenegro within 24 hours at the place of stay. In the case of accommodation in a hotel, the registration is taken over by the hotel. The child ID card is fully recognized for entry into Montenegro. Since December 19, 2009, citizens of Montenegro have been able to enter the EU states without a visa.

Import and export of foreign

currency There is no limit to the amount of foreign currency that can be imported into Montenegro. Amounts from the equivalent of 1,000 euros must be reported upon entry and the receipt issued for them must be kept until departure.

Violations of the registration requirement are punished with foreign currency confiscation upon departure.

Importing and exporting

goods Goods for personal use can be imported into Montenegro duty-free, but must be exported again. There are numerical restrictions for certain items (cameras, laptops, etc.). It is recommended to register higher value items upon entry and to ask the customs authorities to produce a certified import list. The following products can be imported duty-free: Alcohol (1 l wine or 0.7 l spirits over 22%), tobacco products (200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 g smoking tobacco) and perfume or eau de toilette (0.25 l).

How to get to Montenegro

The quickest way to get to Montenegro is by plane. The national airline Montenegro Airlines flies to all major airports. The country can also be reached by ship across the Mediterranean, by car, train or intercity buses.

Travel in the country

Air connections

Airports are located in Tivat and Podgorica. Montenegro Airlines flies to both airports.

Rail

The rail network of Montenegro has a length of about 250 km. From Podgorica you can reach the rest of the country’s cities as well as Belgrade in Serbia.

Bus

There are bus connections throughout the country as well as overland connections to other European countries.

Roads

Montenegro’s road network is well developed. The length of the paved roads is around 3,100 km.

Motorway

There are currently no motorways in Montenegro. But a motorway from the Adriatic port of Bar to Boljare in the north on the border with Serbia is planned. The motorway should be completed by 2019.

Car rental

In Montenegro you can find the usual car rental companies.

Taxi

Taxis are easily available in all major cities in the country.

Ferry connections

Montenegro has ports in Bar and Kotor. There are passenger connections to Italy.

Traffic rules

To avoid trouble with the police or even the courts, drivers should strictly adhere to the traffic regulations in force in the country. Regardless of the information given here, it is advisable to obtain more detailed information from the ADAC, the AvD or the transport clubs of Montenegro.

Top speeds

  • Urban: Since January 1, 2007, there has been a speed limit of 50 km/h in localities.
  • Country roads: There is a speed limit of 80 km/h on country roads

In addition, it is of course necessary to pay attention to the current local speed limits, which are indicated by traffic signs.

Other regulations

Since January 1, 2007, dipped headlights must also be used during the day. Violations can result in fines.

From January 1, 2007, drivers and motorcyclists must also have a safety vest with them and wear it if they leave their vehicle on roads outside built-up areas after an accident, breakdown or for other reasons.

Blood alcohol limit

The official blood alcohol limit for drivers of motor vehicles is 0.5.

Infectious Diseases

The following infectious diseases are to be expected in Montenegro, which do not or rarely occur in Germany, Austria or Switzerland:

  • Malaria, there is no risk of malariain the country.
  • AIDS, HIV
  • Amoebic dysentery
  • Bacterial agitation
  • Lyme disease, as a result of tick bites
  • Cholera, an infection risk only exists for travelers who can come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.
  • Intestinal infectionsfrom contaminated food or water, including amoeba, lamblia, salmonella, shigella and worm infestation, as well as all kinds of viruses and bacteria.
  • Early summer meningo encephalitis, mainly as a result of tick bites
  • Hepatitis A and B, an infection with hepatitis B, is only possible in people who can come into contact with blood or those who have sexual contact.
  • Kala Azar disease
  • Leishmaniasis Disease
  • Polio, polio
  • rabies
  • Trichinosis, especially when eating pork
  • Typhoid fever, an infection risk only exists for travelers who come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.

Vaccination recommendations The following vaccinations are recommended.

  • Cholera, but only among travelers who can come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food
  • Diphtheria, a vaccination against diphtheria should always exist, also in the home country
  • Hepatitis A and B, vaccination against hepatitis B, is only required for people who may come into contact with blood or who have sexual contact.

Montenegro: Currency and Shopping

The national currency of Montenegro is the euro, although the country officially does not belong to the euro zone and also not to the EU.
