Northern Mariana Islands: travel information
Formalities, visas
A valid passport is required to enter the Northern Mariana Islands. You will then receive a visa for 30 days upon entry. If you want to stay longer, you can have the visa extended for a fee in US dollars. US citizens do not require a visa and can stay in the country indefinitely.
Import and export of goods
The import and export of weapons, ammunition or explosives is strictly prohibited. In addition, the import and export of plants and animals protected under the Washington Species Protection Act is prohibited. Violation can result in severe penalties.
Duty-free
The Northern Mariana Islands are a duty-free zone, so there are no restrictions in this regard.
Departure tax
There is no exit fee.
However, those who come to Saipan Island by boat must pay an entry fee of US $ 62 if the boat has less than 1,000 register tons. There is also a so-called dockage fee of US $ 56 per boat per day.
How do you get to the Northern Mariana Islands?
By airplane
The main airport is located on Saipan Islands. This is served daily by Japan Airlines and Northwest Airlines from Japan.
Continental flies to Saipan twice a week from Taiwan and Hong Kong.
With a yacht
If you arrive with your own boat, you should avoid Saipan and sail or drive directly to Rota.
Travel in the country

The Northern Mariana Islands have a total of around 360 km of roads.
Bus
There is no public bus system.
Rental cars
On the main tourist islands, rental cars are easy to get around.
Bicycles Bicycles
can be rented on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

The islands are connected by the Tinain Express six times a day.
Flight connections
There are a total of six airports. The islands of Rota, Saipan and Tinian are connected daily by Freedom Air and PIA.

Infectious Diseases
In the Northern Mariana Islands, the following diseases, which are rarely or rarely widespread in Germany or Central and Northern Europe, are to be expected:
- Malaria, there is no risk of malaria infection.
- Cholera, only applies to risk travelers
- Dengue fever disease, the risk of contracting dengue fever, exists on all islands.
- Intestinal infections from contaminated food or water, including amoebas, lamblia, salmonella, shigella, worm infestation and all kinds of viruses and bacteria.
- Japanese encephalitis, the risk of contracting dengue fever, exists on all islands.
- Polio, polio, there is little risk of infection.
- Tetanus, only for risky travelers
Vaccination recommendations
When traveling to Northern Mariana recommended vaccinations against the following diseases:
